What is a Freelancer?
No – not the Merriam Webster Dictionary definition. We’re breaking down the true meaning of becoming a freelancer. A freelancer isn’t simply someone who decides to work from home, apply to jobs online, and expect a living from there. In fact, a freelancer is an entrepreneur that has accepted the risks, failures and bumpy journey to success. With writing, there are countless people that can write decent articles or content – but not all of them can call themselves successful freelancers. Why? Either they don’t have the savvy boss qualities, independence or comprehension of business. Do you have any of these? Find out if you have what it takes to be a successful freelance writer!
Qualities of a Freelance Writer
I recall one month of freelancing that left me completely empty-handed. No clients. No interviews or invitations. Rejections. After a few weeks, I simply couldn’t bring myself to apply to jobs anymore. But you know what? I had signed up for this. I knew certain periods of my freelancing journey would leave me fruitless and frustrated. It’s the acceptance of risk and failure that makes a freelancer.
The first quality? Boldness. It’s a one that can ensure if you have what it takes to be a successful freelance writer. Being a freelance writer – or any entrepreneur for the matter – requires risky decisions. Perhaps you should take this job, but…well, it’s not exactly your area of expertise. Or – “Should I really hire someone to create my company’s blog?” Questions like these are tricky and no one can answer them but you. Sometimes, it’s the bold decisions that allow a business to thrive or die.
Natural Born Leadership
A freelance writer, who sets out to be his or her own boss, most likely possesses the star qualities of a natural born leader. Entrepreneurs, freelancers, business owners – however you want to refer to them – usually have the hunger and drive for independence.
For instance – my first job? Owning a car wash business. Sure, I didn’t have business cards or a store. But I had my feet, a bucket and soap. I bloomed from there. Then, the next job was baking cookies, muffins, brownies, and yale chips (!). I was on a roll.
The point is – I’ve had the drive for self-reliability and ownership for a long time. Then, after discovering my passion for writing – I was able to put it into place.
Freelancers are usually creative; they have something to express to the world. Whether it’s writing, designing, or creating – a successful freelancer has a knack for creativity. After all, not too many people are going to bother looking at someone who shows dull work or content, are they? Not for long, anyway.
Do you possess these qualities? Do you have what it takes to be a successful freelancer? If you do, great! If you don’t – either freelancing is not right for you or you have a bit to touch up on. Don’t worry! Sometimes, we all have a rough start. But the important is to get started and really find out what it takes to be a successful freelance writer.
